About Us

Don Guanella Special School (briefly DGSS) is a day care centre for the physically handicapped and intellectually challenged disabilities.

It was started in the year 1998 by the Guanellian priests and the seminarians of our institute in James Street, Poonamallee. They took initiatives to gather the persons with disability (‘Good Children’) during the Sundays. When the new seminary was inaugurated, they shifted to Karayanchavadi and they began the centre in a small building called “Vallogia Dispensary” which was abandoned by the FSJ sisters. They renovated and continued our activities till 2007 when the new building was inaugurated in the year 2007.

It is a non-profit religious institution for the boys and girls. The guanellian fathers tried their level best to obtain the support from the government of Tamil Nadu and they have achieved partially. The government temporarily accepted as the government recognized institution.

The centre welcomes the children between the ages of 5 to 15 and above for custodial care and vocational training. Guanellians are happy to spread the mission of their Congregation namely the Servants of Charity, whose primary mission is to care for those who are poor, neglected and abandoned in the society.

Following the footprints of Blessed Louis Guanella, DGSS understands and fulfills the needs of the context and thereby wipes away the tears of those who cry like the paralyzed in the gospel “Sir, I have no one ” (Jn 5:7).
